VIC: Shell picket ordered to end by Supreme Court
Striking maintenance workers picketing Shell's Geelong petroleum facilities have been
ordered to leave the site immediately by the Victorian Supreme Court.
Justice BARRY BEACH says he is making the order because the pickets are likely to lead to
violence, deprive the state of fuel and are costing Shell enormous losses.
Justice BEACH has also disagreed with previous rulings that the picketing action is
protected under federal law.
He has ruled the unions must not take any action against Shell in the Federal Court,
intensifying what has become referred to as turf war between the two jurisdictions on
industrial disputes.
Justice BEACH says that Shell is NOT a party to this dispute between the unions and
contractor Danum United.
Justice BEACH has ruled that the unions pay for quarter-page advertisements in the Geelong
Advertiser publicising his order.
