New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, considering a request for the extradition of Tuscarora Indian Timothy Jacobs to North Carolina, is no stranger to controversies involving Native Americans.
One of the highlights of Cuomo's early political career, in fact, was helping mediate a peaceful end to a three-year standoff involving the claim of a band of Mohawk Indians to an abandoned state girls' camp in the Adirondack Mountains.
That incident started violently in 1974 with Indian occupation of the Moss Lake camp and the wounding of two passers-by by gunfire.
And American Indian Movement founder Dennis Banks presented Cuomo with one of his first challenges as governor by fleeing California and seeking sanctuary on the Onondaga Indian Reservation near Syracuse. South Dakota Gov. …
