I am writing in response to Rick Karlin's article, ``Medical student has eyes on salary.'' As a medical ``spouse'' I've observed our health care system for 19 years. The headline did not do justice to this student's question.

In today's world, the medical student represents the best and brightest of our young women and men. Prior to medical school, she or he has completed four years of college. Most are in their 20's when they begin an intensive and incredibly demanding apprenticeship. Some are married and may be starting families.
