Vic: Double-amputee finishes world-record climb
MELBOURNE, Feb 10 AAP - An Australian double amputee has completed his world-recordclimb of Africa's Mt Kilimanjaro.
Warren Macdonald, 37, of Melbourne, yesterday became the first double above-knee amputeeto reach the summit of Africa's highest peak.
Mr Macdonald, who lost both legs in a climbing accident on Queensland's HinchinbrookIsland four years ago, finished the gruelling climb almost a week ahead of schedule.
Speaking via satellite phone, Mr Macdonald said the climb proved nothing was impossible.
"Hopefully it will inspire people - both disabled and able-bodied - to realise theirdreams," he said.
Mr Macdonald set off from Tanzania on January 24 and was expected to take three weeksto reach the 5,895-metre summit.
He wore purpose-built prosthetics and was accompanied by 20-year-old Tanzanian farmerHamisi Lugonda, who was born without arms, a photographer, filmmaker, nurse and localguides.
The team is now making its way down the mountain.
